The Highest Water Consumption In Australia
WA uses more water than any other state in Australia. The average household in WA uses 327,000 litres of water per year according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics. That is much higher than other places in Australia. The average household in Victoria use 160,000 litres per year. The average family in Tasmania use 147,000 litres per year.
The average household in South Australia uses 194,000 litres of water per year. The average family in Queensland uses 200,000 litres of water per year. The only place that uses more water than WA is Northern Territory. The average household there uses 349,000 litres of water per year.
WA residents are using 3 percent more water than they did last year. They use an average of 335 gigalitres per year. One gigalitre is equivalent to one billion litres of water.
The dry climate of WA is partially to blame for the high water consumption. However, there are some things that WA residents can do to save water. Dave Kelly is the WA Water Minister. He stated that WA has been affected by climate change.
According to the WA Water Corporation, 40 percent of the state’s water is used in gardens. The corporation has given out 4,431 $100 fines this year in order to encourage people to cut down on their water usage. Last year, they gave out 5,866 fines.
ABS data has shown that WA residents use more water, but they still pay the least for water. The average price is $2.51 per kilolitre. The report also showed that water consumption declined by 5 percent from 2015 to 2016.
The decrease in mining was one of the things that caused the water consumption to decrease in WA. Australians used over 16,132 gigalitres of water last year. Australian households used 1,899 gigalitres of water.
Lauren Binns is the ABS Agriculture and Environment Statistis Director. She stated that the fishing, forestry and agriculture industries used more water than any other industry. According to Lauren, the Australian industry is more efficient today than it was in the past. She said that for every gigalitre of water that is used, there is a $108 million economic output. Lauren also stated that this is a 11 percent increase from the previous year.
The Water Corporation has stated that the figures that it has is different from the AVS Data. According to the Water Corporation, the average family in WA only uses 231,000 litres of water per year.
